Recently the FDA has released a statement regarding grain free diets and a link to canine heart disease. At this point, we do not know the exact cause or link between grain free diets and heart disease in dogs. However, specialists can say with confidence there is a dietary factor that is harming the hearts of some canine patients. There are still several unanswered questions on this topic which is frustrating for pet owners and veterinarians alike. We are in touch with various specialists and will be keeping up to date on further updates on this topic.
Attached is an article from veterinary nutritionists at Tufts University which answers the one question many pet owners are asking.
Q: "If my dog is eating a BEG [boutique companies, exotic ingredients, or grain-free diets] diet but has no symptoms, should I test for DCM or switch to a different diet?
A: It’s unlikely that most dogs eating a BEG diet will develop DCM. However, given the fact that we don’t yet understand why BEG diets are affecting some dogs and because DCM is a life-threatening disease, I recommend you reconsider your dog’s diet until we know more.
